The following photograph demonstrates the steps in making the painting Fata Morgana. Unfortunately, the camera was not perpendicular to the drawing, distorting the image to some degree.  

The first photo is of the five-minute drawing and made with one continuous line. I did not take the pencil off of the paper. I then used the flat side of a graphite stick to indicate shadows. 

 

Secondly, I applied the image to the canvas. I usually get photocopies and trace the image onto the canvas using tracing paper made from newsprint and compressed charcoal. I applied paint using a cake decorator filled with paint. Finally, I glued pieces of lace for the shadows.

 

 Once the first coat had dried, the next step was to start applying color, 

Even more color is applied, and the idea of the finished painting starts to take shape. The camera was at an angle, distorting the image

 Almost complete, just the finishing touches need to be applied.
